AEO vs SEO for Law Firms: What Changes and What Does Not

SEO and AEO share a foundation. The differences are in how pages are written, how identity is verified and how success is measured.

Short answer

SEO aims to earn rankings and clicks in a list of results. AEO aims to earn a place inside the answer. They share a foundation: Google says meeting its technical requirements covers you for search generally, including AI formats. The differences are in how pages are written, how identity is verified and how success is measured.

Key takeaways

  • Google says meeting its technical requirements covers you for search generally, including AI formats.
  • AEO adds answer-first writing, clearer identity signals, access for several AI crawlers and prompt-based measurement.
  • SEO work such as indexing, quality content and local presence is still the base layer.
  • Treating AEO as a separate bag of tricks is the most common mistake.
  • Split your effort by fixing the shared foundation first, then adding the AEO layer.

The shared foundation

Google's May 2025 guidance on succeeding in its AI experiences lists eight points: focus on unique, valuable content for people; provide a great page experience; make sure Google can access your content; manage visibility with preview controls; make sure structured data matches the visible content; go beyond text; understand the full value of your visits; and evolve with your users. It also says that meeting the technical requirements covers you for search generally, including AI formats.

In other words, a firm that has an indexed, fast, accurate site with helpful pages has already done most of the work for Google's AI features. For those features Google adds only that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet.

Where they differ

SEO AEO
Goal Rank and earn the click Be used and cited inside the answer
Unit of work A page targeting a topic or keyword A page that answers one question, written so a passage can stand alone
Bots to think about Googlebot and Bingbot Those, plus OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and others
How you check results Rankings, impressions, clicks Appearance across repeated prompts, citations, referral visits
Stability of results Fairly stable for a given query and place Variable run to run

The last row comes from the evidence. In SparkToro's January 2026 study of ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI, the chance of two responses listing the same brands was under 1 in 100. Rankings move too, but not that way.

What AEO adds

  • Answer-first writing. The opening paragraph carries the answer so a passage can be lifted cleanly. See how to write a page AI answers can quote.
  • Identity you can verify. Bylines, bios and consistent firm details, covered in attorney bios and firm identity.
  • Access for more crawlers. OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic each run a search crawler that you can allow or block.
  • Different measurement. Citation counts, referral visits and repeated-prompt checks, described in metrics that matter.

What SEO still does that AEO cannot replace

AI features draw on search indexes. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can be a supporting link, so indexing, crawl access and snippet controls stay essential. Quality content and a clear site structure still decide whether your pages are worth fetching. And the Pew study shows that most search visits still lead to ordinary results: people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits to pages with an AI summary and 15% of visits to pages without one, and about 18% of the searches in the sample showed a summary.

Ahrefs adds a caution against leaning on rankings alone. It found that about 38% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10, down from about 76% in its earlier study. Ranking helps, but it does not decide citation by itself.

The mistake to avoid

The most common mistake is to treat AEO as a separate trick set: special files, hidden prompts, or pages stuffed with definitions. Google says you do not need AI text files, special markup or special schema.org structured data for its AI features. Pages that exist to manipulate a system instead of helping a reader are also the pages most at risk under spam policies. Google says using AI to produce many pages without adding value for users may violate its policy on scaled content abuse.

How to split your time

This is our suggestion, not a measured ratio.

  1. Fix the shared foundation first. Indexing, crawl access, page speed, accurate names and addresses. The technical readiness checklist covers it.
  2. Rewrite your best pages answer-first. Start with the practice areas and questions that bring in the clients you want.
  3. Add the AEO layer. Check bot access, strengthen identity signals and start a monthly AI answer audit.

Common questions

Should a law firm hire separate AEO and SEO vendors?

Usually not. The two share a foundation, and a vendor who treats them as unrelated will probably duplicate work. Ask any vendor how its AEO work connects to indexing, content quality and measurement, and what it will not promise.

Does AEO matter for local searches like "divorce lawyer near me"?

It can, but we have no documentation on how each AI tool treats local legal queries, so we avoid claims about it. Keep your name, address and phone consistent and your location pages accurate, then test the queries your clients use with an AI answer audit.

Is there anything in AEO that SEO would never recommend?

Mostly the extra attention to bots beyond Googlebot, to measuring appearance across repeated prompts, and to the exact wording of the first paragraph on a page. None of that conflicts with SEO. See AI crawlers and robots.txt.
