What Is Answer Engine Optimization, and Why Should Law Firms Care?

Answer engine optimization is the work of being understood and cited by AI search tools. Here is what it covers and what it cannot promise.

Short answer

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of making your content easy for AI search tools to retrieve, understand and cite when they answer a question. It matters to law firms because some people now see an AI-written answer first, and in Pew's 2025 study they clicked regular results less often when one appeared.

Key takeaways

  • AEO means preparing your pages so AI tools can find, read and cite them. It does not mean tricking them.
  • Terms like AEO, GEO and AI search optimization overlap and none is a formal standard.
  • Pew found clicks on regular results fell from 15% to 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary.
  • Most of the work overlaps with good SEO, plus clearer answers, verifiable identity and different measurement.
  • No tool can promise that an AI answer will name your firm.

What AEO means

An answer engine is any search product that responds with a written answer instead of only a list of links. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot all do this, and each can show the pages it used. Answer engine optimization is the work of making your pages good material for those answers.

You will also see generative engine optimization (GEO) and AI search optimization. The labels overlap and none is a formal standard. What matters is the job: be easy to find, easy to understand and easy to verify.

Why law firms should care

Legal questions are high stakes, and people ask them in plain language, which suits an AI assistant. Clio's 2025 Legal Trends Report found that more than half of consumers have used or would consider using AI to answer a legal question. Of those who used it, 28% were directed to contact a lawyer.

The behavior around the answer is changing too. Pew Research Center studied the browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. People clicked a regular search result in 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary and in 15% when it did not. Only 1% of visits to pages with a summary included a click on a link inside it. If an answer can satisfy the question, fewer people reach any website, and the sites named in the answer matter more.

What changes for a firm

Four things change, and each has its own article.

What stays the same

Google says the underpinnings of what it has long advised carry across to its AI experiences, and that meeting its technical requirements covers you for search generally, including AI formats. For its AI features a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and Google says no additional technical requirements, special files or markup are needed. In practice that means a fast, crawlable site with accurate, helpful pages is still the starting point.

What AEO cannot do

It cannot promise a mention. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search results is not guaranteed. The answers also vary. In a January 2026 SparkToro study, 600 volunteers ran 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI a combined 2,961 times, and the chance of getting the same list of brands in two responses was under 1 in 100. A good AEO program raises the odds that your pages are useful to these systems. It does not control them.

Three first steps

  1. Ask the main AI tools the questions your clients ask and write down what they say about your firm. The AI answer audit shows how to do it properly.
  2. Confirm that your most important pages are indexed and that nothing blocks the major search bots.
  3. Rewrite one practice-area page so that its first paragraph answers the question a client would ask, then compare it with your current page.

Common questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

The labels overlap. People use answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization and AI search optimization for similar work. None is a formal standard, so judge a vendor by what it does, not by which term it uses.

Which AI tools should a law firm care about?

Start with the ones your clients use. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode reach the most people through ordinary search, and ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot all cite web sources. Our complete guide compares what each documents.

Will AEO replace SEO?

The sources we reviewed point the other way. Google says meeting its technical requirements covers you for search generally, including AI formats, so the foundation is shared. See AEO vs SEO for law firms.
