The Law Firm's Guide to AI Search Optimization
A practical framework for being found, understood and cited in AI-powered search, built on what Google, OpenAI and others actually document.
Short answer
AI search optimization for a law firm means making your pages easy to find, read and trust, so AI tools have good material to cite. Google says its AI features need nothing beyond an indexed, snippet-eligible page, and no company guarantees a mention. The work is clear answers, verifiable identity, open crawling and honest measurement.
Key takeaways
- Some questions are now answered before anyone visits a website, so being cited matters alongside being ranked.
- Google says its AI features have no extra technical requirements beyond an indexed page that is eligible to show a snippet.
- Five jobs are in your control: answers, identity, corroboration, access and measurement.
- No search company guarantees placement, and studies of AI citations disagree and change quickly.
- Lawyer advertising rules apply to everything you publish, including AI-assisted pages.
The search shift
For two decades, being visible online meant ranking in a list of links. AI search changes the shape of the page. Google shows AI Overviews and AI Mode on many searches, and ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot answer questions directly, often naming or linking to a handful of sources.
The click data is the reason to pay attention. In a study of 900 U.S. adults' browsing in March 2025, Pew Research Center found that people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary and in 15% of visits when it did not. They clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits. About 18% of the searches in the sample showed a summary. That is one month of one product, and Google has changed its products since, so read the numbers as a snapshot.
People are asking legal questions this way. Clio's 2025 Legal Trends Report found that more than half of consumers have used or would consider using AI to answer a legal question, and that 28% of those who used it were directed to contact a lawyer. For a firm, the question is whether the sources behind those answers include you.
How AI answers get their sources
Each company describes this differently and none publishes its full method. Our article on how AI search tools choose sources goes through the details. Four points matter most for a law firm.
- Answers are built from searches. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue several related searches across subtopics while they build a response, which it calls query fan-out. A page can be pulled in for a sub-question you never targeted.
- The technical bar is basic. For Google's AI features a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements and no special files or markup to add.
- Other tools run their own crawlers. OpenAI says a site should allow OAI-SearchBot to be eligible for ChatGPT search results, and Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot. See AI crawlers and robots.txt.
- Nothing is guaranteed. OpenAI's help page says placement is not guaranteed, and Google says that meeting its conditions does not guarantee a page will be crawled, indexed or served.
The visibility framework
Effective AEO is not a bag of tricks. It is a short list of jobs that make your real expertise easy to find, read and verify. This is our framework, built from the sources in this guide. It is not an official method from any search company.
-
Answer the questions clients ask
Open each page with a direct answer, then add the specifics a generic summary lacks. Start with how to write a page AI answers can quote and the wider content playbook.
-
Make your identity easy to verify
Use one firm name, address and phone number everywhere, and give every lawyer a real bio page. See attorney bios and firm identity.
-
Earn corroboration
Other reputable pages should confirm what yours say. Read about third-party profiles, directories and reviews.
-
Keep the doors open
Pages must be indexed, crawlable and readable as text. Use the technical readiness checklist and the structured data checklist.
-
Measure honestly
Track what you can verify and ignore the rest. See the metrics that matter, GA4 tracking and the monthly AI answer audit.
What the platforms say, side by side
These are the statements each company has published for site owners, as of the date at the top of this page.
| Product | What it documents for site owners |
|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | The page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. No additional technical requirements, special files or markup. Traffic is counted in Search Console under the Web search type. (Google) |
| ChatGPT search | Allow OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI's published IP addresses to be eligible. Placement is not guaranteed. (OpenAI) |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in search results. Perplexity recommends allowing it and its published IP ranges. (Perplexity) |
| Claude | Claude-SearchBot improves search result quality. Blocking it may reduce visibility in search results. (Anthropic) |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing | An AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, in public preview, shows when your site is cited. (Microsoft) |
A 90-day sequence
This is a suggested order of work, not a documented method. Adjust it to the size of your firm.
- Days 1 to 14: baseline. Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, confirm your key pages are indexed, and run a first AI answer audit to see what the tools say about your firm today. Write down every wrong fact.
- Days 15 to 45: fix access and identity. Check robots.txt and CDN rules, correct names, addresses and bios, and add firm-level structured data.
- Days 46 to 75: publish. Write or rewrite your five most important practice and question pages with direct answers, specifics and sources, and have a lawyer review them.
- Days 76 to 90: measure and decide. Repeat the audit, set up the GA4 channel group, and decide what to do next based on what changed.
What not to do
- Do not buy a guarantee. Treat any promise of a guaranteed AI mention, from any vendor, as a reason to walk away.
- Do not mass-produce pages. Google says using AI to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate its scaled content abuse policy.
- Do not invent credentials. Google treats fabricated creator profiles, such as made-up names, AI-generated headshots or false credentials, as deception.
- Do not make claims you cannot support. ABA Model Rule 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communications about a lawyer's services. Read the ethics article before you publish comparisons or results.
- Do not block search bots by accident. A blanket disallow or a firewall rule can keep out the crawlers that decide whether you can appear at all.
Where the evidence is thin
Three caveats apply to everything in this field. First, studies of which pages get cited disagree and keep changing. Ahrefs reported in March 2026 that about 38% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for the same search, down from about 76% in its July 2025 analysis. Ahrefs suggested that the extra searches Google runs behind the scenes explain part of the shift.
Second, answers vary from run to run. In a January 2026 SparkToro study, 600 volunteers ran 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI a combined 2,961 times, and the chance of seeing the same list of brands twice was under 1 in 100. A single screenshot proves very little.
Third, most public numbers on AI visibility come from software and marketing vendors, and the companies that sponsor this site are vendors too. We name the source of every figure so you can weigh it.
Common questions
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Google says you do not need AI text files or special markup for its AI features. For other tools, treat any claim that such a file helps as unverified unless the company documents it. Fix indexing, crawler access and your page content first.
Is AEO different from SEO?
They share a foundation. Google says meeting its technical requirements covers you for search generally, including AI formats. The differences are in how pages are written and how results are measured. See AEO vs SEO for law firms.
How long until changes show up?
Nobody publishes a schedule. OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect for its search systems, and Google says recrawling can take days to months. Content changes depend on when each system next fetches your page.
Can a small firm do this without an agency?
In our view, yes for the basics. Most steps are ordinary website work: confirming pages are indexed, fixing names and bios, checking robots.txt, and rewriting key pages. Outside help can save time, but it cannot change the fact that nothing is guaranteed.
